"The Moon"

By Ron Riekki

Last night, we looked at the moon.

We never do that.

We see it,

but we don’t look at it.

We were laying in the grass

and we could see the houses from the hill

and you pointed at one

and said that’s the one where the murder happened

and I told you not to tell me that,

that there were two hundred houses below us

and you could have pointed to the pastor’s house

or the guy who owns the flower shop

or that house over there that has the triangular roof

and so we got silent

and we stared up at the moon.

There was only one moon,

so there wasn’t a lot of choice.

And I was happy

because

no murders

have happened on the moon

and I said that out loud

and you said

sure, that we know of.
